FAQ German phone numbers

Find clear answers about German numbers and how they work for your business.

We offer three main types: Local numbers (e.g., Berlin 030, Munich 089) for a local presence, National numbers (032) for a nationwide presence without a specific city tie, and 0800 Toll-Free numbers which are free for callers ensuring maximum accessibility.

For local geographic numbers (like 030 for Berlin), the Bundesnetzagentur (German Federal Network Agency) typically requires proof of a local address. However, for National (032) and 0800 Toll-Free numbers, a local physical presence is generally not required, making them ideal for international businesses.

An 0800 number allows customers to call you for free from any German landline or mobile network. You, as the number owner, cover the call costs. This is the gold standard for customer service in Germany and significantly lowers the barrier for customers to contact you.

German numbers start with the country code +49. When advertising your number internationally, use the format +49 30 12345678 (dropping the leading ‘0’ of the area code). Domestically, it would be 030 12345678.

Once we receive any necessary documentation (if required for your chosen number type), activation is typically very fast. Virtual numbers can often be set up within 1 business day, allowing you to start receiving calls to your existing phone lines immediately.

Absolutely. Our German virtual numbers come with a complete professional phone system. You can set up German text-to-speech welcome messages, call menus (“Press 1 for Sales”), call recording for quality assurance, and time-based routing, all managed from our online dashboard.
